The conductor
The prefrontal cortex: planning, working memory, impulse control and sustained attention.
The brain–body–lifestyle connection
ADHD is a difference in how the brain works. How it shows up day to day depends on the body and the life around it.
Three systems
The prefrontal cortex (the conductor), basal ganglia (the clutch), reward system and cerebellum (the metronome), and the dopamine and noradrenaline that connect them.
Blood sugar, gut health, thyroid and adrenal hormones, and nutrients such as iron, zinc, magnesium and omega-3 all affect how the brain works.
Sleep, food, movement, screens and stress can make ADHD traits easier or much harder to manage.
ADHD is whole-person. That is why we look at all three.
Inside the ADHD brain
These brain regions rely on chemical messengers, mainly dopamine (reward and motivation) and noradrenaline (attention and alertness), to communicate.
The prefrontal cortex: planning, working memory, impulse control and sustained attention.
The basal ganglia: starting, stopping and switching between tasks, and physical restlessness.
The limbic system: emotions, frustration and the need for more stimulation to feel motivated.
The cerebellum: timing and pacing, and the "time blindness" so many people with ADHD know well.

We don't diagnose ADHD or prescribe medication, and we never start, stop or change ADHD medication. We work alongside your GP and psychiatrist.
Close to home
From our base in Macclesfield we see people from Macclesfield, Cheshire and anywhere in the UK, with all consultations online. The process is the same either way: your history and questionnaires, a structured assessment, targeted tests, a 12-week plan and regular reviews.
The Neurogenics ADHD Brain Profile looks at ADHD symptoms, metabolic contributors and lifestyle factors. It's part of Brainworks ADHD, with weekly podcasts, a newsletter and live Q&As, for £9.97 a month.
